Out of Ituna

I left Toronto in late June. I was travelling in the company of two friends and their
dogs. We each had our packs, our camping equipment and a few essentials for our new
life on the coast. All this, and my guitar, was crammed into a white Volkswagen
Rabbit.
By mid-July we had made it as far as Saskatchewan. After several near collapses,
we finally abandoned the car in Ituna. Jim managed to hitch a ride in a pick-up for
himself and the dogs. Sue and I bused to Regina where she would meet Jim for a
train to Vancouver and I would start hitchiking west.
I had never done a major hitch trip before. My pack, full of cook pots and stove,
sketch book, journals, pencils and pens, etcetera, seemed impossible to carry for
long. Jim said in a week I'd be running it up the roadside to catch a ride.
He was right.
